Thanks for Observer Community Awards

We hear so much about the vandalism, violence and other distressing things that go on that it was a great pleasure to be in the company of so many people that are doing good things for the community.

Not one of them set out to do something to win an award, but they get involved because they like to see people enjoying themselves and creating the community spirit and long may they continue to do so.

It will be interesting to see whether the clubs and activities will be able to survive long term but we must hope that as the present generation grow up, they will be looking for something more substantial to do and suddenly have the urge to give something back.

Fred Dinenage is the ideal compere for such an occasion as the awards, as he brings out the best in people and puts them at their ease.

The Observer should be congratulated on organising an event, which draws together such a very special group of people and it was a privilege to be in their company.

The cheers that rang out when a winner was announced were remarkable and it was a pity everyone there was not able to be recognised for their achievement.
