Pier is a great asset to town

How sad I was to read in one of the national newspapers that our new pier is being nicknamed 'The Plank'.

Said paper printed a distorting photograph of the far end of the new pier which was peopled but had nothing built on it.

I went on the pier this week and was overwhelmed by the sense of wonderful space and air.

What people are forgetting, I think, is that this is a 21st-century venue and the space left is for performances and drive in movies etc.

I was so pleased NOT to see those ghastly gambling, bingo machines strewn all over the place, encouraging a bad habit.

Of course if people want to gamble there are always online and mobile apps available.

I visited the new restaurant which had a takeaway bar and a licenced bar at either end.

The food was healthy salad plus a cooked meal if you wanted it and the seating spread outside under cover.

The staff there were efficient and friendly and the food plentiful and nothing seemed overpriced.

What more can you ask for?

The shops are now just small stalls which will probably fare far better than the previous, dark, wooden, galley-like alley of undercover shopping units that we had before and were not taken up by local traders, probably due to the rents required.

I think our new pier is a great asset to the town and wish it and all who venture aboard – and it really does feels like being at sea!

All the very best.
