We need councillors

I SEE that council leader Carl Maynard is, once again, displaying his contempt for the people of Bexhill and, once again, bringing into his argument the oft-imagined 'silent majority'. He suggested in the Observer last week that one impassioned speaker at the recent forum was trying to 'sway feelings' with falsehoods.

Isn’t this the same leader who was part of the brigade who assured us that the shelters would not be built if they were not “fit for purpose”?

Bexhill residents do not want to be educated by Rother over a possible town council.

There is much more to learn from the new Localism Bill.

Other solutions may be preferable. But, for the moment, why not call the solution “a Town Council”? as this name symbolises the aspirations of the people for a separation from the heavy yoke of Rother in important local decisions.

We need our own councillors, accountable to us, to make the big decisions for us.

Rother, undoubtedly, does an excellent job in many areas.

They have an army of hard working staff and achieve admirable results.

However, when the big projects come up, those in charge seem to lose their heads with catastrophic results.

We will study the council’s information but we will also study other towns who have their own councils.

I suspect we shall find more useful information there - the advantages and also the disadvantages. We will try to find the best solution whatever that may be in consultation with our own Bexhill councillors.

I see that Cllr Maynard is already nailing his colours to the mast - he opposed a town council. He states that “some officers are disturbed”. Could it be that they are getting rattled at the thought of Bexhill people becoming more powerful?
