Strong record for visitor economy

Rye Town Council recognises that what it has been doing to ‘promote Rye as an attractive place in which to live, work and study’ and ‘contribute to appropriate and sustainable economic development’ might not constitute the most efficient use of its limited resources (letters, August 14).

This is why its economic development working group has been asked to determine how the council might ‘best contribute’ to these objectives.

The town council has a strong record of supporting Rye’s visitor economy.

Rye Heritage Centre this year celebrates 25 years of providing visitor information and attractions, including the Town Model.

Last year, the council put aside £15,000 towards the appointment of a town manager.

Unfortunately, the Chamber of Commerce was unable to source match funding.

However, the £15,000 remains ring-fenced for economic development.

In January, to widespread acclaim, it employed a town steward charged with improving the appearance of the public realm.

Mr Savory suggests working groups change nothing; however, one succeeded in increasing the typical attendance at the annual town meeting from two dozen to 70-90 residents and another resulted in effective local responses to snow and ice.Members of the public may request to attend working group meetings and, if anyone considered that the council was not delivering as it should, they had the opportunity of standing for election in May, or being considered for co-option in July.
