Over the triple doorways of Milan Cathedral three inscriptions span the arches. Over one is carved a wreath of roses, and underneath the wording, '˜All that which pleases is but for a moment'.

Over the one the other side is a sculptured cross, and the words, ‘All that which troubles us is but for a moment’.

But underneath the great central arch is the inscription, ‘That only is important which is eternal’.

Over the past Easter weekend for many there have been things to enjoy - beautiful cars on parade around the town centre, chocolate indulgences, time to relax with family and friends – but, in a sense, these pleasing things are ‘but for a moment’.

Some this Easter have been enduring pain through ill health or loneliness, and for some, the grief of bereavement.

Those words over the second arch remind us that, though they may seem endless, in fact they are ‘but for a moment’ compared with eternity.

That’s why the inscription over the central arch should so demand our attention.

And the most important thing about Easter is that the Lord Jesus Christ, by dying on that central cross for us, and rising to life, made eternity a bright and glorious reality for all who will believe and receive him into their lives. Let’s go for the best!
