LETTER: Our best days are yet to come

David criticises successive British governments for allowing too many companies to fall into foreign hands (as I do) but what he fails to appreciate is that the EU would block any attempt by our government to stop a takeover of a large company.

For example, despite widespread public and political opposition to the takeover of Cadbury by US based Kraft our government was actually powerless to act because the EU merger regulation prohibits intervention and the EU has the final say.

Likewise, the EU controls trade tariff decisions. So while the US hastily slapped massive anti-dumping tariffs on under-priced Chinese steel to protect its industry, our government had to wait months for the EU to make a decision.

While Brexit in itself will not be a cure-all for the British economy it will at least give our government a greater degree of control, if indeed we can ever elect a government willing to exercise such control and bat for Britain (and that’s a big if).

David criticises the UK for being a major importer yet goes on to criticise Brexit for causing the price of imports to increase. Surely the weak pound helps improve the competitiveness of British producers at home and abroad which will reduce imports and increase exports. Isn’t that what you want David?

David says that the government is having to spend £4.5 billion to guarantee farming and science subsidies as though it is a new expense.

We are a net contributor to the EU and we are already spending the money (and some). The government has simply said that it will maintain such subsidies in the short term post Brexit for continuity.

David is quick to talk down Britain and seems to advocate protectionism which is ironic since membership of the EU hampers that.

I’m fed up of listening to remainers saying that we can’t leave. If the human race had listened to people who say ‘we can’t’ we’d all still be living in caves.

Great Britons are being born every day. Our best days are yet to come.
