LETTER: Opportunity for enhanced school

It is understandable that the headteacher and chair of governors of Colgate School support the planning application for ten new houses on land opposite the school on the promise of carparking by demolishing Wellsprings (County Times, June 25).

This could exacerbate the situation rather than solve it.

Surely the demolition of a relatively new and desirable residence to cover the area in Tarmac to be used as a car park twice a day for about half of the year is short-sighted vandalism?

In addition to concentrating traffic movement closer to the junction of Blackhouse and Forest Roads there will be the added movement of traffic from the new houses.

Very few, if any, children attending the school are from the village, and I understand a child recently moved to a house close to the school has been refused a place there for September!

The school building itself is showing its age, has a number of temporary classrooms, is not ideal for modern education and has a playing field on the opposite side of the road to the school. Another hazard for the children.

As a constructive idea, a new school is to be built on the nearby Kilnwood Vale site, so Colgate School could be amalgamated with that one.

The new site would be more accessible than the present one, the facilities would be modern, parking/dropping off children could be properly addressed by the Highways Authority and the sale of the existing site could be used to help fund the project.

QED – Colgate School gets a new building, parking will be safer and easier, road safety will return to Forest and Blackhouse Roads and the residents of Blackhouse Road will be happier.
