It's all about the people

I AM writing in response to comments about the forthcoming Rustington Parish Council West ward by-election (Gazette letters, September 3).

It is unfortunate that a party political row is now at the forefront of people's minds, rather than local community issues during this by-election.

I'm standing for election on to the parish council for the good of the area and to represent the people who live within it. I believe that the parish council should be about the people, and NOT politics.

I am not using the parish council as a stepping stone to further a career in politics. I truly want what is best for a village where I have grown up, as did my parents, my grandparents and now my children.

As chairman of Rustington Chamber of Trade and Commerce for the past three and a half years, I worked with the parish council on many projects and can honestly say, hand on heart, I never noticed a political agenda at any time.

In response to Jamie Bennett's letter, I need to point out that I did not call this by-election. An individual is unable to do such a thing. I believe at least 10 people living within the actual ward have to make a presentation to do this.

Also, he is mistaken in stating the number of non-elected councillors.

There are at least 12 democratically elected councillors out of the 16 who currently sit on the council.

In response to John Richards' letter, to quote him: "Which do you want? An open and honest Lib-Dem or a Tory seeking to deceive?". I am not a Tory or linked to any other political party for that matter and I would like to ask what and exactly who is being deceived?

At the end of the day, it is for the people of Rustington West ward to decide who they want to represent them. I can guarantee that I will do my best for the area and the people who live in it.
