I share worry about Irresponsible cyclists in Hastings

I’d like to pass on my unequivocal support to your correspondent in the Observer (Policy issues around cycling, 10th July) who expressed her concerns about the safety of pedestrians, particularly on pavements (which is illegal) and shared spaces and especially for the more vulnerable ones. I agree with every word she says.

I have written to the council on numerous occasions over the past year about the numerous near misses I’ve experienced and the many I’ve witnessed for other vulnerable pedestrians. I’ve regularly suggested that signs should be erected in shared spaces warning cyclists of pedestrians and banning speeding, wheelies, cycling ‘no hands’ and using a mobile.

I now hope that the council will not only consider these suggestions as a matter of urgency, but will have noted the concerns of all recent letters in the Observer, especially this detailed and informative one last Friday. Perhaps the council might like to use the Observer to now outline its plans, as it did for cyclists with the proposed new cycle routes around Hastings (Observer 22nd May), for the safety of its poor, beleaguered pedestrians on pavements, the seafront, in pedestrianised areas and in Alexandra Park from irresponsible cyclists, especially those on the ever-increasing number of electric scooters and cycles.
