Host of acrimonious correspondence

FOR several weeks now these columns have been host to some acrimonious correspondence about Littlehampton Town Council’s decision to remove our Town Show from the Family Fun Day on Rosemead open space and install it in a new community centre on Southfields Recreation Ground.

Although it’s plain that the two events on one site fit together like bacon and eggs, both are likely to suffer by being separated – a fact that town councillors supporting the move into the community centre have seemingly ignored.

A quick skim through the latest edition of the town council newsletter Progress explains why they are so desperate to go ahead, regardless of the damage to both events.

Since they are committed to current and future expenditure on the community centre, they need its accommodation to be fully booked; so it will be convenient to kill two birds with one stone by adding the show to its bookings and cutting out the cost of a marquee on Rosemead.

RESPONDING to Mr Franks letter, above, chairman of the community resources committee, councillor Alan Gammon said: “I do not propose to repeat the arguments made previously other than to clearly state the decision of the town council.

“This is that the Town Show 2013 move to the Southfields Jubilee Centre on the second Saturday of September (subject to the completion and suitability of the site) with the community family fun day being held on the third Saturday of August.

“However, I do need to comment, regarding the bookings for the new Southfields Jubilee Centre. In advance of advertising, the site is virtually fully-booked and the idea of using it for the town show is certainly not linked to this in any way.”
