Girlguides travel to South Africa in aid of orphans

Girlguiding Sussex Central have pledged to support orphans in Africa with the help from West Sussex businessman, Chris Connors, hairdresser, County Ambassador, and Founder of CoCo’s Foundation.

Set up in 2010 The Coco’s Foundation helps provide food, shelter and clothing to orphans affected by HIV and AIDS.

Many often have neither a proper home nor clean water supplies. They also face major health problems.

Over the last 18 months, members of Girlguiding Sussex Central have been fund raising to support a County team who will work for two weeks at the Children’s Home in Mseleni, Kwazulu, Natal, South Africa.

On Thursday August 7, the team of 16 girls and four lead travelled to the home, and whilst there will build a ‘family unit’ house, paint in the children’s home, work in the vegetable garden and lead play / after school activities.

Chris Connors, founder who also travelled with the group said: “I am excited to be working with the Guides, as this is a first for the Foundation. I have joined them for several training sessions in advance of the trip and I am impressed by their commitment to the project.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Girlguiding Sussex Central on behalf of the Foundation and the young people in Africa who they will be helping.”

Deborah Phillips, County Commissioner said: “I am very proud of our representatives, and thank not only them but the whole of the membership within the County who have done so much to support this project.”
