Ducks’ weather

Despite the appalling weather on bank holiday Monday, Arundel Lions went ahead with their annual Arundel Festival Duck Race.

A few hardy spectators watched from the river banks as Mayor Michael Tu, helped by town crier Angela Standing, started the race by launching 1,200 plastic ducks from the Town Bridge into the River Arun.

The ducks, backed for £1 each, raced the 300m to the finish and raised over £1,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The result was a clean sweep for Arundel residents. Yvonne Foote was the holder of the winning duck and received £100, which she generously donated to the charity. Paul Londesborough scooped the second prize of £50 and the third prize of £25 went to both Hilary Knight and William Jones, as their ducks could not be separated at the finish.

Arundel Lions would like to thank the local residents and visitors for supporting the event so enthusiastically and the Arun Divers for recovering the ducks after the race.
