Cuts attacking the weak

I have read with dismay the long list of cuts proposed by ESCC to adult social care support for those who are disadvantaged and the army of loving family carers that look after them.

Our national government insists that it wants to have people who need care to be looked after in the community and preferably in their own homes.

The vast majority of this looking after is done by unpaid family members who are motivated by love.

The cuts proposed by ESCC ravage the social infrastructure that supports these carers in their selfless and unpaid work.

The proposals suggest that ESCC does not understand the factors that enable carers to carry on, often 16 or more hours a day, seven days a week.

The consequence will be not only that loved ones end up prematurely in residential or institutional care but that carers will get burnt out and sick.

All of this places burden on the public purse.

If national government policy is to be enacted locally then social infrastructure for carers and their loved ones should be receiving additional investment, not the swingeing cuts that ESCC proposes – 80 per cent in the case of voluntary and community based support. Sorry, ESCC, as you say, you face tough choices, but by attacking the weak and vulnerable you are making choices that are not only morally wrong, they are counter productive too.
