Cranleigh school installs ceramic poppy in chapel as a visual tribute

We have acquired one of the 888,246 ceramic poppies that filled the Tower of London’s famous moat from July-November last year, and installed it in the chapel, next to the plaque inscribed with the names of the Cranleigh Prep School pupils who sadly died during the Second World War.

The Prep School opened its doors in 1913 and, whilst the first pupils at the school would have been too young to fight in the First World War, the poppy will serve as a powerful visual tribute to the 29 pupils who died during the Second World War.

Our orchard was planted in 1947, successfully covering the mess created from the air raid shelters beneath it during the war.

Parents of boys who were at the school during this time donated the apple trees and their names were recorded in the painting that hangs in the Keppie Room.

In March this year, we will replace the last of the 20 trees that have sadly not survived and several of the ‘boys’ who planted the original trees in 1947 will return to the school to commemorate the occasion.

We plan to sell apple-related produce to raise money for the charity Tusk in the Autumn Term.
