Bond is not fit for entertainment

I note that the latest James Bond film, Spectre, is now on show at the Odeon, Hastings, and the Kino, Rye, with plaudits in the national press.

“So what?” you may well ask.

This raises a very serious ethical issue: the James Bond films glorify and glamorise the gun, a lethal invention whose sole purpose is to kill.

The gun has caused untold suffering (just think of all the college shooting sprees in America) and claimed countless lives.

Worst of all, it flagrantly violates the principle that human life is sacred.

The moral case against it could hardly be stronger. In the light of these grave considerations, I hope that responsible readers will, at the very least, be receptive to my argument that the Bond films, with their emphasis on the gun and implicit approval of its use, give entirely the wrong message, that killing is okay in our society. If so, I suggest they should vote with their feet, by not trotting mechanically to the nearest picture-house to see James Bond.
