High praise for dementia bus

Hastings Court and especially manager Katie Brewster deserve high praise for their initiative described in last week's Observer, which brings home to relatives and carers the reality of living with dementia.

Those of us who are committed to creating a dementia friendly Hastings and St Leonards so that people in the early stages of dementia who are still able to shop and visit amenities- alone or with carers, can be confident that they will be treated with respect and understanding, have been encouraged by the interest and enthusiasm shown by those who have come along to our dementia friendly sessions because they are keen to learn.

But in the long run, all our efforts, and all the excellent publications on the subject can never measure up to the personal experience which Katie and her team are managing to provide.

My colleagues and I are well aware of the excellent work which Steve Nuttall provides week in- week out at the Bridge Centre, as he has said ‘ Living well with dementia is first and foremost about love and care’.

Surely there cannot be a way of achieving this aim than by the personal experience provided by Hastings Court’s Virtual Dementia Tour Bus.

All of us who strive to make life better for those with dementia and their carers, will surely want to send Hastings Court our very best wishes towards achieving the ‘Butterfly’ home status they hope to achieve.
