COLUMN: The one activity that every woman should be doing

“Women should weight train, it’s as simple as that.

The health benefits are endless and lifting weights can add an exciting challenge to your normal routine.

For many, weight training involves a sad set of 3kg dumbbells. When such light weights are used, the activity is often called “toning”.

What is toning? The definition is “giving greater strength or firmness” but doesn’t that sound like a passive approach to fitness?

Women want results fast and more importantly, want to look and feel great. You can be a beauty that happens to lift an impressive amount of weight at the gym.

Many women think that regular weight training will transform them into, well, a man.

This is not the case. Your arms will not look like Popeye’s and your voice will not deepen. Weight training does not cause women to bulk up and women will not lose their curves.

In fact, weight training can help to promotes curves and sculpts the figure into that ‘hourglass shape’. As lean muscle mass develops, all areas of the body improve. The waist gets smaller, the bottom more firm and the hips and thighs slimmer.

Another benefit of weight training is the fat and calories it can help to burn. Who doesn’t hate fat? It is the cause of cellulite, the dreaded muffin top and anything else that jiggles. Well jiggle no more!

Lastly, weight training will boost your confidence and make you feel powerful.

Women are not delicate flowers. Ladies can train hard in the gym. Lifting an amount of weight you never thought you could is empowering. Fitting into a smaller size doesn’t hurt either.

Just don’t let the iron get to your head. No really, that would hurt. Happy weight training!”
