Open gardens at Fairlight help in the fight against coastal erosion

The aim of the event was to raise funds for the Fairlight Preservation Trust.

The Trust has a main objective of preserving life and property by procuring the provision of coastal defences to protect Fairlight Cove and surrounding areas from coastal erosion and landslip.

It also promotes the conservation, protection and improvement of the flora and fauna.

Villagers participated enthusiastically in the event in order to support the work of the trust.

Fairlight resident Denise Lamb, who helped organise the event, said: “An astonishing number of residents and people from far and wide visited the gardens.

“Many venues provided tasty refreshments and unique items for sale.

“The planning group originally set a target of raising £2,000 to donate to The Preservation Trust.

“After a very successful two days that target was exceeded.

“A generous cheque for £4,325 was gratefully received by David Shortman chair of the Preservation Trust, seen here in one of the open gardens with some of the participants and organisers.”

Fairlight has been severely hit by coastal erosion over the years, which has seen a number of homes, near the cliff-top, crumble into the sea in areas such as Rockmead Road.

The Trust, established in November 2004, was formally known as the Fairlight Coastal Preservation Association, which was formed in 1985. Fairlight has seen two coast protection schemes in the past decades to slow down cliff erosion. They include two rocky barriers in the sea at the foot of the cliffs.
