Horticultural Show: Some delightful entries made the Village Hall a colourful place on Saturday for the Autumn Show, where the trophy winners were: - The Royal Horticultural Society’s Banksian Medal: Lesley Kennedy. The Pearson Perpetual Challenge Cup: Lesley Kennedy. The Trowel Perpetual Challenge Cup: Richard Tobitt. The Mary Berkley Memorial Salver: Linda Whiting. Batehup Perpetual Challenge Bowl: Joy Taylor. Evan Jones Memorial Salver: Lesley Kennedy. Society’s Domestic Perpetual Challenge Cup: Lynne Pomfret & Rosemary Husey. Sheffield Memorial Cup: Joy Taylor. Now, if we want to save these people from extensive silver cleaning, we need to join in! Through the next few months, the Society will be holding lectures, and the next chance to enter will be in Spring, so do take this opportunity to join so you can enjoy a varied series of interesting talks and the fun of the Shows. Badminton: Friday Badminton Clubs in the Pretious Sports Hall restart this week, with the Junior Club at 5.30pm and 6.30pm (Primary & Secondary ages), with the adult club following on at 8pm. The Monday badminton club will also be restarting this week, and runs for an hour from 5.45pm. All very welcome – we have two courts so can accommodate a range of abilities.

Dancing: Your alternative on a Friday evening, is our popular Dance Club, which meets in the Village Hall for Sequence Dancing from 7.30-10pm. It costs £2 which includes tea and biscuits, and is suitable for all ages. Sequence dancing is very sociable, fun and good exercise without being exhausting! Craft Fair: On Saturday, The Bonfire Society will be holding another of their excellent Craft Fairs from 10am-2pm. There will be a good mix of stalls with crafts from local makers. Have a cup of coffee with a slice of homemade cake, or a bacon roll, or buy a cake to take home.

Pink Piglet Day: After you have visited the Craft Fair, the next port of call is Northiam Scout Group’s popular Pink Piglet Day which is also being held on Saturday, at Scout HQ, Goddens Gill. On offer is a raffle, tombola, food hamper, teas and jolly things to do for all the family. Draw tickets are on sale at 50p.

Blue Cross Fete: Featuring a Fun Dog Show, Dog Agility, Young Artist Competition, games and live entertainment, the Blue Cross Annual Fete starts at 10am on Sunday. Registration for the Dog Show is from 10am, with classes beginning at 10.30am. There will be live entertainment, with a burger and beer from 12-1.30pm, with the fete continuing until about 4pm.

Women’s Fellowship: Bob Hinds’ talk is titled On a Wing and a Prayer, and refers to aeroplanes, rather than angels. If you would like to meet with this jolly group of ladies, just pop along to the Church Centre for 2pm on Tuesday, or call Ann Miller (252881) if you need a lift. The afternoon includes the talk, tea and biscuits and a chance to spot a bargain on the sales table.

Coffee Stop: Coffee Stop opens in the Church Centre every Wednesday from 10-12 for coffee a chat.

Parish Council: The next meeting of the Parish Council will be on Thursday 11th September, in the Jenkins Room at 7pm.

Open Garden: For an opportunity to see the garden at South Grange, Quickbourne Lane, in its early autumn splendour, the garden will be open under the National Garden Scheme next Saturday and Sunday (13th & 14th) 11am-5pm.

Ride & Stride: The annual Ride & Stride event on September 13th is a sponsored course around the churches in Sussex. The event is fairly unique in there is no fixed route - thus it encourages people to see the wonderful churches and chapels we have in the area and to explore parts of Sussex that they may not normally see.

For those of a competitive nature, there are trophies awarded for the number of churches visited.Any rider or walker can ride or walk where they choose, and may start and finish at any church, visiting as many or as few as they like. Other than by bicycle the only accepted alternative is on foot, wheelchair or horse.

The money raised will be shared equally between the Trust and the church or chapel nominated by each participant. In Sussex over 600 buildings will be taking part, and some of them providing refreshments. There is a list in St Mary’s for anyone who would like to take part, or sponsor someone. Jumble needed: Time for a clear-out! Northiam Nursery and Beckley pre-School will be holding a Jumble sale on Sunday 28th September. If you have any jumble to donate, please take it to Beckley Village Centre on weekdays 9-12, or call 260582 to arrange for collection. Northiam Village Hall Trust will be holding a Jumble Sale on Saturday 13th September, and jumble can be left at the Hall in the morning.

St Mary’s Services: (7th): 8am Holy Communion, 10.30am Holy Communion, followed by farewell to Linda and David Smith.

Quiz Night: Already the next fund raising event for the parish church of St Laurence is on the horizon in the form of a quiz night to be held in the Village Hall on Saturday 13th September. Tickets are on sale in the Village Stores or at the door on the night and cost £5 per person. Teams will be of 4 – 6 people, bring your own nibbles and liquid refreshments will be available. John Overall is the quiz master and he has described it as an audio/visual quiz!

Flower Festival: The recent Flower Festival held in the church has raised the wonderful sum of £1798 and that is in spite of the dreadful weather on bank holiday Monday, when it poured all day!

Sports News: A mixed bag of sporting results this week, as is so often the case. The last football friendly match played at Catsfield resulted in a 6 -2 defeat by Tackleway, hardly good preparation for the first competitive fixture tomorrow versus Herstmonceux at home 3pm. Apparently, scores were even until half time when quite surprisingly Tackleway stepped up a gear and gave us a hiding, is this fair?. Sunday saw the last cricket match played on some quite long grass at Netherfield in beautiful sunshine. We batted first and finished at tea with 240 for 1, Derek Fuller with 135 and James Wilson 89 not out. Our bowlers despatched Netherfield for 58 all out with Nick Gurr, Derek Longley and Tom Bristow-Diamond getting one wicket each and Connor Earl 3 for 17 and Andy Williams 3 for 6. Thanks to the Cook family for all the work they do for the team, father Keith is the Captain and gets the teams together, mother Christine does a good share of the teas and daughters Barbara and Katherine share the scoring. We notice that other teams find it difficult to get volunteers for these jobs, but Catsfield has always had a loyal following and we never go to a match without a scorer. Mike Davey ensures the wickets are done, cleans the pavilion and generally keeps the team going, together with help from Sean and Martin. We look forward to next season and in the meantime the wicket has to be repaired and various other jobs need to be done.

Mobile Library: The East Sussex County Council’s Mobile Library will be making its fortnightly visit to Catsfield and will be parked in the usual place outside the Village Hall on Wednesday 10th September from 3.45pm – 4.45pm.
