THE HASTINGS Observer has stepped in to help the borough council find a suitable polling station after a hotel closed down at short notice.

The Sussex Edwardian Hotel, formerly High Beech Hotel, in Eisenhower Drive, suddenly closed its doors earlier this month. (See page .....)

The building had been booked to be used as a polling station for the Ashdown ward in the local elections on Thursday.

Now the station has been moved to the Observer office in Telford Road just off Battle Road.

It will be open from 7am until 10pm.

It is believed to be the first time the newspaper’s premises has been used as a polling station.

Kevin Boorman said: “We were informed by local resident that the hotel had closed.

“We needed a facility in a similar location.

“Even if the hotel reopened in time for the election we felt it was inappropiate to use it given the recent events.

“We are very grateful to the Hastings Observer for offering their premises as a polling station at such short notice. It will make an ideal location.”
