A new play park is being installed on the country park’s Bulverhythe recreation ground, near the Bexhill Road entrance and is expected to be completed in the New Year.

It will comprise toddler swings and a basket swing, and a large play mound with a slide, tunnel and climbing structures. It will also have a sand pit, an access bridge and a bench in the shape of the nearby ship wreck The Amsterdam. Parts of the play area will be built by the Hastings & Bexhill Wood Recycling Project and its volunteers.

The project is being led by the Bexleigh, Hythe and Abbey Residents Association (BHARA) jointly with Hastings Borough Council’s Play Hastings and Parks teams.

The new play area will cost around £67,000 and funding is coming from The Veolia Environmental Trust, which has awarded £36,000 through the Landfill Communities Fund, Tesco Bags of Help (£8,000), Hastings Borough Council (£5,500), the Foreshore Trust (£5,000) and The Lions Club (£1,375).

Grants of £250 also came from the police and the Round Table. BHARA also raised £6,000 through a several activities and events, including a sponsored walk, a lantern procession and a street party.

Delia Spears, secretary of BHARA, said: “This is truly a project drawn out of neighbourhood need and community spirit. This free, open and inclusive playground will be close by to a neighbourhood which has no play facilities.
