SMOKERS wanting to kick the habit can now get specialist help locally either by telephoning nurses running a pioneering service or through the internet.

Until recently it was only possible to access the service, based at the Uckfield Community Hospital, following a referral from a GP or other health professional.

But now help is open to all either by telephoning 01825-769999 ext 5145 or by emailing [email protected].

The Smoking Cessation Service helped 112 people from the Crowborough and Uckfield areas give up smoking in the first three-quarters of 2001/2002, a success rate of 71 per cent.

Nurse specialists Janet Dann and Jan Van Bunnens run initial information evening sessions followed by a six-week course for groups and individuals on a one-to-one basis.

They design programmes tailored to the needs of individual smokers and can supply products to help them give up smoking such as Nicotine Replacement Therapy (patches and gum).

Mrs Dann said: 'We know that some people don't want their GP to know that they still smoke. Now smokers who want to quit can access the service without having to tell their GP. This change will make it easier to help more smokers access the service and give up smoking.'

One ex-smoker Mona Vine from Crowborough had tried for 25 years to give up smoking before trying the Smoking Cessation Service in April 2001. She said: 'The reason that I've not had a cigarette for over a year now is because of the encouragement and emotional support I received. If I had a craving, I would phone Janet and we would discuss my craving. At the end of the conversation, I realised that I didn't really want a cigarette. Now I tell everyone I know who has previously tried to quit smoking to contact Janet and Jan. It really works.'
