A NEW contractor handling the town’s waste collection and recycling services took over this week.
Kier, which now operates such services for Hastings Borough Council (HBC), Rother District Council, Eastbourne and Wealden councils, started on Wednesday (July 3).
Cllr Jay Kramer, HBC’s lead member for the environment, said: “Four local authorities in East Sussex have got together to jointly appoint a single contractor to carry out beach and street cleansing, and collect waste and recycling and, indeed, I am very pleased to now chair the joint waste committee overseeing this process.
“We are expecting the new joint contract to offer very significant savings, and a better service, so it really is a win-win situation. Kier was appointed late last year, and started work in Eastbourne and Wealden in April.
“I would like to reassure residents that although changes are expected much later in the year, at the moment nothing should change. All that people should notice this week is new dustcarts and cleansing vehicles. Everything else, including the day of waste and recycling collections, and arrangements for assisted collections, will remain exactly as now.”
