YOU NEVER KNOW: I do voluntary work where I sit with someone, to enable their carer to go out for few hours. Currently I sit with a man on the Nevill who was born in South Africa who at the age of 17 years, joined the South African Air Force and learnt to fly. After passing his flying test in a gypsy moth, he then when on to fly Spitfires during the war, dropping bombs and strafing enemy (German) targets in Italy. He even landed his Spitfire on a beach in Libya and went for a swim. Just goes to show, you never know what interesting lives people have lived when you meet someone new. Thank goodness I am of an age when people learnt how to converse with each other instead of today's society of young people who only know how to grunt in reply to a question.

PARKING: The new date for the meeting to discuss the parking problems on the Wallands and Nevill Road at the start and end of the school day will be Wednesday November 2 from 5pm to 6.30pm at Wallands School.

WALLANDS SCHOOL: Our last netball league matches this year were held on Monday. It was great to see their game skills developing. Wallands 3 and 2 both won and lost a game, Wallands 1 maintained their result of not conceding any goals and winning both games. The children resume the league in February. Well done to the teams and thank you for all the parental help and continued support. Amalie Smith Jarman from Year 6 will be performing with the English Youth Ballet in November, dancing as a cygnet in Swan Lake at the Hawth Theatre in Crawley. Tickets are available now from the Hawth box office, www.hawth.co.uk. Friends of Wallands (FoW) AGM will be on Thursday November 10 at 7.30pm in the main hall. We will be serving cheese and wine, so please can you let the secretary know if you will be attending for catering purposes email Bekki [email protected]

ST MARY’S SUPPORTERS CLUB: Bingo tonight, Friday, with raffle and cash prizes. Eyes down 8.30pm and everyone welcome.

CHRIST CHURCH: Today, Friday, is Messy Church from 10.30am to 1pm. We have lots of craft activities, celebration and then a lunch. This is a free event for all ages but children must be accompanied by an adult. Morning worship at 10.30am on Sunday will be led by Rev Jim Thorneycroft and Sunday Club for children will be meeting that morning. Tots will be meeting next Friday from 9.30am after a week off for the school holidays.

LEWES NEVILLE WI: Met on Wednesday October 19 at St Mary’s Church Hall, Highdown Road at 7.30 pm. It was our AGM and was very well attended. The committee agreed to stand again and were voted in, in block, unanimously. Kay Hackett was nominated for president and she agreed to continue in this job which she does so brilliantly and we appreciate her dedication to our WI. Following the business of the meeting we enjoyed refreshments of wine and nibbles as well as coffee and tea to wash down slices of Sarah Stephens wedding cake which was delicious. Thank you, Sarah’s Mum Stella, for bringing us some.

We then had a talk by member Shirley Kirby who is also archivist for East Sussex Federation. She has been looking at old WI tablecloths. When a WI folds its tablecloth becomes the property of the federation. These are stored at Headquarters but really should be displayed so others can admire their craftsmanship and design. Many have fascinating tales to tell of bygone WIs. It was a fascinating presentation. The competition was A Selection of Garden Produce in a Colander which was won by Barbara Bishop. Next month the talk is Hypnotherapy and Personal Awareness by Fleur Newton Edwards and the competition is a Christmas Bauble.
