A petition calling for the Government to do more to stop the killing of civilians in Gaza was handed over to the town’s MP on Sunday (August 3).

Amber Rudd met with campaigners from Hastings Intercultural Organisation, East Sussex Islamic association, Women’s Voice, Hastings Against War and Hastings Palestine Solidarity Campaign at the Garden of Delights festival in St Leonards Gardens.

She was presented with the petition, which contained more than 200 signatures.

Ms Rudd Spoke to campaigners who told her they were horrified at the bombing raids, leaving Palestinians trapped under siege in Gaza. She pledged she would forward the petition to the Prime Minister.

She said: “I join my constituents in urging the Prime Minister to speak out against Israel’s bombing of Palestinian civilians.

“Like them, I am distressed by the continued bombing of Gaza.”

The petition comes a week after scores of protestors walked along the seafront to the Town Hall on July 25 to demonstrate against the current conflict in Gaza.

Participants included men, women and children who carried banners and shouted slogans like ‘Stop the genocide now’.

Fighting between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic militant group Hamas has claimed more than 1,000 Palestinian lives, most of them civilian, since July 8.
