THE issue of teenage binge drinking provoked hot debate when Hastings MP Amber Rudd joined Helenswood School council to their monthly meeting.
She asked the students whether a rise in alcohol price would deter young people from drinking to excess and they discussed the issue, making suggestions such as stronger enforcement of ID in shops and off licences, additional costs to vodka and providing weekend youth acticities to promote socialising without booze.
“It was fantastic to see school democracy in action with the girls feeding back their concerns in a really organised and constructive manner,” he said. “We had a good discussion about teen drinking and they made some useful suggestions which I will be following up on.
“It was really interesting to hear it confirmed from these bright young residents that they would welcome additional action to help cut down on anti social drinking.”
The pupils also quizzed Amber on issues such as Hastings Pier and tax for pensioners.
