Now Monica, 60, has retired after 26 years at Lewes Prison. And she recently received the Imperial Service Medal for her long service.

Monica started at Lewes Prison on the switchboard but soon worked her way into administration.

She has seen six prison governors come and go. 'They have been very happy years, she said. 'The staff at the prison are a lovely crowd and a joy to work with. I feel deeply honoured to receive this award.

She was presented with the ISM by prison area manager Tom Murtagh and governor Paul Carroll.
