Mayor joins special knockout

Bexhill Town Mayor Paul Lendon acted the dummy, when he dressed backwards to demonstrate one of the games in the Lions 'It's a Special Knock-Out' competition at the Heathfield Sports Centre.

Continuing the theme, Cllr Lendon joined some of the Lions to compete in a running backwards race '“ his team was last, to the great amusement of other contestants!

The event was organised by Bexhill and other Lions Clubs in the area, attracting around 100 adults and youngsters from Bexhill, Hastings, Hailsham, Uckfield, Heathfield and Eastbourne all of whom have special needs.

Organiser David Burstow from Bexhill Lions Club said: "You wouldn't believe the fun, enthusiasm and terrific competitiveness between the teams as they battled their way through a series of games, and the disco at half time at least provided a bit of relative relaxation."

The climax of the afternoon came when the winners were announced and the Mayor presented all the participants with certificates and medals.

After thanking the small army of helpers and Rother District Council for a donation towards the costs, Mr Burstow added: "It was a delight to see proper sportsmanship at work. It's great to see the competitors leaving with such a feeling of achievement and joy, whether their team won or not. That's what sport is really all about."
