Man charged with robbing a couple in Bognor Regis

A man has been charged with robbing a couple and assaulting one of them in Bognor Regis.

Tony Merrett, 29, of Fir Tree Way, North Bersted, appeared before Worthing Magistrates Court on Monday, June 25, charged with robbery of cash and a watch from a couple and an assault on one of the victims in Gravits Lane, Bognor, two days earlier.

He also faces a charge of possessing an offensive weapon, a broken wine bottle, and resisting arrest on the same day in Bognor.

Merrett is charged as well with theft of food and wine from a shop in Bognor and assault by beating of a man in the town on June 21.

His case has been sent to Chichester Crown Court for trial on September 6. He has been released on conditional bail.

A 32-year-old woman who was arrested with Merrett on June 23 on suspicion of robbery has been released on bail until July 2.
