Lowest levels of unemployment in the UK

The level of unemployment in the south east is the lowest in the UK, according to Office of National Statistics released on Wednesday (December 16).

There were 170,000 people out of work from August to October – a drop of 37,000 from the last period and 40,000 less than this time last year.

In Hastings and St Leonards, there were 255 fewer claimants of jobseeker’s allowance, which is 15 per cent less than the same period in 2014.

There was a drop of 14 per cent for Rother as there were 95 fewer claimants.

Jobcentre Plus manager Bruce Campbell said this was great news for the area.

“Our Christmas recruitment campaign has been really successful as local employers are employing local people and we will continue working local employers to sustain that success,” he said.

Employment in the region went up by 79,000 to just less than 4.5million people and according to department of work and pensions employment minister Priti Patel, there are more women in work than ever before.

Mr Campbell said Jobcentre Plus is now offering support for trying to find employement online.

“We now that a lot of employers are recruiting online nowadays so we want to make sure our customers are in a position to compete in the jobs market,” he said.
