A STUDENT was given an inside view of a day in the life of an MP.

Lola Breka, who studies at Sussex Coast College, was invited to Parliament last Thursday by Amber Rudd as part of International Women’s Day celebrations.

Lola attended a number of events to mark the day, including a tour of Parliament to learn about its history and functions, a visit to Number 10 Downing Street and a chance to listen in on the debates in the House of Commons.

There was also an afternoon tea reception in the Speaker’s Apartments, during which they met the Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow and other MPs.

MPs from all political parties along with senior House of Commons staff members participated in the project, hoping to inspire young women from all walks of life.

Ms Rudd said: “International Women’s Day promotes women’s rights and women’s achievements.

“It was a great opportunity for her to experience political life and to see how Parliament works. I hope she enjoyed her day and left with a positive message about political life and how to get involved in taking a leading role in the community. Lola impressed me with her interest in politics, maturity and ambition.

“She suggested some innovative ideas on how we can improve our local area.

“I hope in a few years more young women like Lola will return as members of Parliament.”
