The team at Battle Road Dental Practice is backing Mouth Cancer Action Month and offering free checks for symptoms of a disease that claims around 2,000 lives each year.
Organised by the British Dental Health Foundation, Mouth Cancer Action Month aims to increase public awareness of risk factors, signs and symptoms, and encourages everybody to visit their dentist regularly to help spot the disease early.
“Mouth cancer can often be spotted in its early stages by a dentist during a mouth examination and, if caught early, there is a 90 percent chance of survival,” said David Campbell at Battle Road Dental Practice, St Leonards on Sea. “Dental teams are in the ideal position to share information about the risks and symptoms of mouth cancer with their patients.
“We are welcoming both existing patients and the general public to visit the practice for a free mouth cancer check every Wednesday between 1-1.40pm throughout November.
“The mouth cancer check involves a quick, painless examination as well as discussing concerns the patient may have such as mouth ulcers that haven’t healed within three weeks, red or white patches or other unusual lumps or swellings in their mouth.”
Dr Nigel Carter OBE, Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation said: “Although mouth cancers are more common in people over 40, research has shown that the disease is becoming more common in younger patients and in women. We are extremely grateful that Battle Road Dental Practice is offering free mouth cancer checks.”
