Local councillor gets his hands dirty to make Old Town cleaner

The hard working volunteers scoured the streets and even collected litter from in between the net huts at Rock-a-Nore.

The initiative was organised as part of The Great British Spring Clean.

In 2015, one enthusiastic individual - Melissa Murdoch - had an idea to get people from all walks of life together in cleaning up the rubbish that surrounds us.

Together, with Adrian Evans, Keep Britain Tidy, Country Life Magazine and a range of supporting partners the Clean for The Queen campaign inspired 250,000 people to get involved in local clean ups through March 2016.

Now the campaign wants to double that number nationally during the month of March.

A week earlier Cllr Bacon led pupils from Sacred Heart Primary School in another clean-up of the Old Town which won praise from local residents including Dee Day White, who commented: “What a wonderful thing to see.

“Cllr Bacon and his group of young volunteers, under the supervision of Sacred Heart head master Mr Hellett, did a great job.

“The gateway into Hastings Old Town has never looked so spruce after it’s spring clean. Well done everyone.

“We maintain the Priscilla Macbean gardens but know our limits and to see an initiative like this deserves a pat on the back. Well done and thank you.”
