Families of those who lost their lives when a vintage Hawker Hunter plane crashed into the busy A27 have been invited to the service at Lancing College.

Hundreds of firefighters, police, paramedics, social workers, volunteers and members of the community who helped in the wake of the tragedy will also be in attendance.

The event is being organised by a group of local authority leaders and representatives of the emergency services, brought together by Shoreham’s MP Tim Loughton.

Mr Loughton said he hoped it would give some comfort to the grieving families and help the whole community to heal.

“This appalling tragedy has shattered the lives of all those who lost a loved one but it has also seen the whole community unite to shield and support those grieving families in these dark days,” he said.

“We hope that a memorial service will further serve to support the families as they struggle to come to terms with such terrible loss.

“We also hope it will support those who were first on the scene, many of whom must be struggling with the burden of what they saw that day.

“These are all highly trained professionals who have been rightly praised for their bravery and dedication in the wake of the Shoreham Air Show crash but no amount of training could prepare them for a scene of such devastation. This is a chance for those professionals to pause, reflect and heal.”

Senior politicians and local dignitaries will attend the service at Lancing’s iconic gothic chapel which overlooks the scene of August 22’s devastating crash.

Dominic Oliver, Lancing College head teacher, said: “I am very pleased that in hosting this memorial service we at Lancing College can play our part in the community’s response to the awful tragedy at the Shoreham Air Show.”
