Kitchen fire prompts safety check

The fire had been extinguished before crews from Worthing arrived at the three-storey block of flats in Victoria Road just after 5.30pm.

Gary Towson, spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, said the kitchen of the first floor property was badly damage and so was the entrance hall.

He said the owners were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

He said officers went round to the property to carry out a free home safety check, where smoke alarms would have been fitted free of charge.
