Isfield & Little Horsted

FIREWORKS: Whoosh. Bang. Aaah. Tonight (Friday) is the night for fireworks as Isfield and Little Horsted Bonfire Society stage their annual Guy Fawkes spectacular. But be warned, tougher rules imposed by insurance companies mean that taking part in the official procession, from the Lavender Line station to Cheltec (next to the Old mill) and back, will be restricted to society members who meet various criteria. These include: Full membership must have been paid by last Wednesday; full society uniform, or approved costumes, must be worn; and those thinking of taking part must have attended this week's code of conduct meeting. That's not to say that others cannot be involved, but they must stay behind the procession barrier rope and not carry torches if taking part in the procession, or simply stand by the Station Road and Buckham Hill roadside and/or watch the fireworks and bonfire in the ICE field behind The Laughing Fish pub. There's always a special fireworks tableau, based on a current affairs theme, which is kept a closely-guarded secret until the night. Should I tell? No. Station Road and Buckham Hill will be closed from 6.15pm until around 8pm. The Last Post, traditionally sounded outside the front of The Fish, will this year be played in the bonfire field. Society chairman Andy Brooks says: '˜Hopefully this will mean that more people will be able to participate. We'˜re looking forward to another grand evening.'

Welcome: There’s quite a lot of new folk moving into Isfield, especially with the opening of the new Lavender Fields estate, so, Bev Ashford, who puts together the village newsletter three times a year, reckons now is a good time to let our new neighbours know what’s going on in this busy village. Bev is planning on putting together a Welcome Pack for newcomers, and is inviting clubs, societies and other interested parties to let her know what’s happening and who to get in touch with. INVESTIGATING: What do we know about our village and maybe our ancestors? Well, Pam Fielding and Wendy Chandler are hoping to point you in the right direction on November 2 when they give a talk on The Secrets of Isfield Churchyard to a meeting of Isfield Wednesday Club. Fortnightly meetings in Isfield Village Hall start at 2.30pm and round off with tea and cakes. More details from Liz Fine on 01825 750658.
