Incinerator planning permission decision due today

Protesters are expected to gather this morning (Wednesday) outside county hall, Lewes, to lobby cuncillors deciding whether a waste incinerator can be built at Newhaven.

More than 16,000 people have objected to the controversial application by Veolia Environmental Services.

The burner is designed to take waste from East Sussex and Brighton and Hove.

A survey of Newhaven businesses has indicated the majority have major concerns about the burner.

The survey was carried out by Newhaven Chamber of Commerce, the Newhaven Community Development Association and the town council.

Out of 68 businesses who responded almost a quarter said they would consider relocating, closing down or deciding not to expand in the town.

*If planning permission is refused Veolia can appeal. If it is granted there is still the prospect that Government cabinet minister, Ruth Kelly, may call it in because it is a departure from planning policies. If she does not call it in, anti-burner campaigners can still call for a judicial review.
