PIN THE DUMMY ON THE BABY!: American customs are creeping across the ocean at the rate of knots, and this week I was invited to a baby shower [a relatively new phenomenon in our green and pleasant land]. With only four weeks to go before delivery, Victoria and AJ’S baby was given a pre-arrival party, at Paula and Alan Riley’s home in Iden. Victoria and AJ, as most of you know, run ‘The Bell’, in Iden, and Paula and Alan are the Grandparents in waiting In trooped the guests, armed with an array of baby gifts, and then, before, during and after a splendid buffet, we played some obstetric-related games. Besides guessing the sex, weight, and possible time and date of birth, we played pin the dummy on the baby, guessed the flavor of some baby food jars, and decorated plain white baby- growers with weird and wonderful designs. We were even given lengths of string, to see if we could decipher the girth of the mum to be. One of the gifts was a giant- sized elephant [it was baby-orientated all the way], and I think that baby Gordon [in whose honor the shower was held], is going to be one lucky little baby.

A COUPLE OF EGG-HEADS IN IDEN STORES!: So who won the Iden quiz last Saturday? Why!, none other than Sally and Chris from Iden Stores, and their team. No wonder they get our change right, and heighten our taste buds with all manner of avant- garde food. It’s a case of buy ‘The Times’, and lean over the counter to get the answers to it’s crossword, before we’ve even left the shop. Well done guys. All that, and Chris even makes his own cheese straws!

THE POP-IN: The next Pop-In will be in Iden village hall, on Monday31st October, at 11 am. Do come along, and start the week with a bit of fun and friendship.

A SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION: There will be a service of Holy Communion in Iden Parish Church, this Sunday at 9.30 am.

BINGO: There will be Bingo in Iden village hall on Thursday 3rd November,. Doors open at 2pm, Eyes down at 2.30pm. Anyone from the Rye area is welcome to join us for a raffle, a Jackpot, a flier, and a light tea at half time [sandwiches and cake.]It’s great fun, and there is no turning out on a dark evening.

IDEN AND DISTRICT NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY: Tonight, in Iden village hall, there is a lecture on ‘New England Fall’, by Brian Gallop’. The meeting begins at 7.30pm, and everyone is welcome .Visitors pay £3.

KNIT AND NATTER ON 8TH NOVEMBER: I suppose to most women, nattering could well be an Olympic sport. Nothing to be ashamed of there, [we are after all a nurturing, intuitive gender!] So ladies, do bring your knitting [or whichever craft you favor], and spend an afternoon in Iden village hall, in the company of others, from2pm-4pm. Everyone is welcome.

TAI CHI: Every Tuesday morning, there is Tai Chi, in Iden village hall, from 10am-11.30am.

TIME TO LET GO: Autumn hasn’t quite let go of summer’s hand has it? Even though there is a distinct chill in the air, and we are filling up the log basket, Autumn is emerging slowly [almost shyly], still allowing a glimmer of summer sunshine, which does a tit for tat job of setting off Autumn’s hues. It’s all a question of allow ability with these seasons. Sometimes they storm in and immediately hog the limelight, and sometimes they are on such favorable terms with the season just passed, that they still allow them the odd turn. Yes!, Autumn is still courting a playground friendship, allowing summer to share, but like all little girl’s, there will be a falling out soon, and Autumn will move closer to winter. [It always happens] These seasons are desperately fickle. Summer has warmth, and beach clothes and light evenings, but winter has snowmen, and Santa and Rudolph and fairy lights, so mark my words Autumn will realize soon enough that there is no competition!
