All Saints has a Vicar and St. Thomas Winchelsea has a Rector and because the two churches are a joint benefice one incumbent has both posts. At present there’s a vacancy - an interregnum. Icklesham fortunately has Canon Hugh Moseley as curate in Charge of Icklesham. Each Church has a committee of lay people, The Parochial Church Council (P.C.C.), to help in the running of their Parish. Both P.C.Cs are happy for Services to be taken by women priests. They both have now decided by a majority vote that they would be happy for a woman priest to be considered as their incumbent.

Staying along with her Grandmother Mrs Linda Tullgren at the home of her Great-grandmother Mrs Kathleen Bowers of Brede Valley View is 7 year old Amber Cowie of El Paso, Texas, U.S. of A. El Paso is in desert country on the border with Mexico. Amber had been amazed by the ‘’green tree tunnels on the e highway’’ and the ‘’lots of birds in the yard’’ We wish all the family a lovely time together.

Last Friday the Icklesham Players A,G.M. took great pleasure in the award of The Joan Baker Memorial Prize to one of the youngest Players Henry Barnicoat-Hill. This very talented young actor was recently seen in ‘’ The Canterville Ghost ‘’.Henry had been brought to the meeting under false pretences so was utterly shocked when his name was announced. He keeps the Cup for a year. Derrick Baker received smaller replica cup son behalf of his daughter and granddaughter who were last year’s winners. The evening’s business didn’t take long so wine,cheese and chat made for a very pleasant evening.

Sunday 28 July 4pm Icklesham Memorial Hall ‘’Wellington’’ Martin Wimbush is the writer,the producer and the actor in this study of a great man with many connections with the South-East. He is a familiar TV face and has just finished filming with Vanessa Redgrave for a production to be screened at Christmas. Tickets are £8 from Icklesham Stores or Nicki Harris 01424 812996.

Sunday 21 July a beautiful day for a brilliant Garden Party at Manor Farm Oast hosted by Kate and Syd Mylrea in aid of Cancer Breast Care. A magnificent raffle, food ,drinks and Ricochet playing the right sort of music for the many guests. With the help of some generous donations the afternoon raised over £900. In this year’s Race for Life Kate raised £200 and has also raised another £800+ for Breast Care Cancer. Yes 2 Grand - well done Kate and plans are already being made for 2014 and include hopefully another lovely Garden Party.

Sunday 21 July. Cricket on a perfect day for the game with the Recreation Ground looking its best. Stuart Baker, the Chairman of Icklesham Cricket Club, was delighted and thanks Adam Stunt for arranging the fixture. Verdayne, the visitors from Croydon, played the game in a friendly and competitive spirit. Icklesham fielded first. Aaron Leech,Jamie Flood,Jason Englefield,Paddy Horton and Adam Stunt performed well. When batting Icklesham had many cobwebs to blow away. Icklesham 88 Redmayne 137.

Old Romney Church got me cinema history minded. The Church’s guide books appear to contradict. One says J.Arthur Rank made a Dr Syn film there and the other says it was Disney. Both were correct. In 1963 Disney made ‘’Dr Syn and the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh’’. This was in colour so repainting the box pews pink was a must. In 1937 Rank made a black and white version starring a young Margaret Lockwood. Going back to the silent film era. Ann Rachlin, the expert on Ellen Terry and her daughter Edith Craig, has researched these two and the silver screen. Between 1916 and 1922 they starred in several silent films. Ann will be giving a talk on this little known part of Ellen Terry’ career at Small Hythe’s theatre on Saturday 17 August at 5.30. Tickets are £7.50. Thursday 18 July a party to make presentations to Pauline Higgs took place. Icklesham School was able to experience change and continuity in the two year phased change of headship. Ideas bounced between Mrs Higgs and Mrs Robinson to the benefit of all especially the people of all ages who make the School community. It has been an effective model of management change. East Sussex and other authorities should consider it. Pauline heard everyone sing ‘’She’s a jolly good fellow’’; her colleagues sang in close harmony; presents were given,and a cake with iced models of pupils in Icklesham red and Mrs Barbara Fellows praised he r Head in most un OFSTED terminology-she was ‘’up for it’’, “got stuck in” and has “the gift of the gab”. Pauline finished reading from the log book of 15 years ago. No longer used they are a true insight into school life.

Wednesday 31 July Entries for the Horticultural Society summer Show in by 7pm at 22 High Fords. The Show takes place with the Fete. Classes include vegetables, dahlias, roses, sweet peas, pot plants and flora art. If you are not a member and would like to have a go jus contact the secretary Ann Osborne 01424 814609.

Saturday 3 August Annual Village Fete including a Fun Family Dog Show, Rye Dance, Pet Level Rescue Boat, The Ridge Fire Station,BBQ ,Licensed Bar, Wealden Brass band and lots of stalls etc

At the start of the Fete Derrick Baker will formally open the children’s play area where a bench in memory of Joan Baker has been sited.
