WANTED – six men, should be confident, outgoing, oh and willing to strip naked in front of hundreds of people.
A local theatre group is searching for performers for their upcoming stage version of the hit film The Full Monty.
The story of six Sheffield steelworkers who cope with losing their jobs by putting on a fundraiser with a difference was a massive hit in 1997 and the stage version - where the action is transferred to upstate New York - has thrilled audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. Now The Hastleons is bringing the show to the White Rock Theatre in May, as long as it can find six strapping chaps to take on the lead roles.
Andrew Pilcher of The Hastleons said: “We are finding the people of Hastings a little bit more shy than we were expecting. What we are looking for is people who might not normally audition for musicals – it is certainly not The Sound of Music!
“People should not be too worried. Although they will have to be naked for a split second there is a whole bank of lighting behind the cast and the audience should be blinded at the moment when they whip their drawers off. In theory they shouldn’t see anything.”
The Full Monty explores themes of family, friendship, identity and sexuality and was nominated for an Oscar. The Hastleons’ search comes after a similar hunt last year unearthed Lucy Anderson to play Belle in Beauty and The Beast, and they are hoping to uncover some more talent this time around.
Auditions take place this Sunday at 2pm at The Hastleons Hall, Bexhill Road, St Leonards. Director Mehdi Hamed Silver and musical director Carl Greenwood will be putting the hopefuls through their paces, but there is no nudity involved at this stage. The group is also looking for men and women to audition for the other roles in the production, as Mr Pilcher said: “If you don’t want to unshackle your tackle - or simply don’t possess any - there are plenty of other parts in the show.”
