SEVEN streets in St Leonards are getting a make-over with work underway to improve housing.

The first property to be rejuvinated is in Kenilworth Road and will be converted into flats as part of a joint project between Hastings Borough Council and housing association Local Space.

The scheme involves Local Space buying up some of the larger houses in multiple occupation, improving the condition of them, creating larger flats rather than bedsits where possible and offering tenants support towards gaining employment and training.

Tony Shoults, Chair of Local Space said: “This is the first property acquisition in a co-ordinated longterm programme in St Leonards with Local Space working in partnership with Hastings Borough Council. “With the Council’s support we hope to continue with further purchases and quality improvement work to help set St Leonards on a path of sustainable regeneration and neighbourhood renewal, working closely with the community.”

Hastings Borough Council leader Jeremy Birch said: “The refurbishment of this property in Kenilworth Road is the start of this very exciting scheme which is set to improve living conditions for residents in St Leonards and we look forward to future developments within the area together with Local Space”
