Holiday fun at Felpham proves popular with young

An annual holiday special in Felpham is again keeping young people entertained.

This week'sstaging of the Scripture Union-run activities is the 89th year they have taken place in the area.

The fun proved as popular as usual. Monday's opener saw 70 members sign up for the first morning of music, drama, craft and games based around a circus theme.

Each session follows the stories of characters from the Bible's old testament. Monday's individual was Samson. Jonah and the Whale was the featured person on Tuesday.

Monday afternoon also saw the traditional tide fight along Felpham beach. About 40 to 50 children and their families took part in the sandcastle building contest.

Their creations survived, for once, because they were built just beyond the high water level.

Other family events included an outing on Tuesday and a craft afternoon yesterday. Tomorrow features fun and games with a barbecue on Saturday evening.

Young people aged over 11 had the chance in daily sessions to explore issues relevant to their age in today's society.

A total of 34 volunteers help out with the young people as well as others, from local churches, involved in behind the scenes work.

Scripture Union volunteer Jane Weavers said the holiday special continued to be well-liked. "We've had some people we have seen before and others we've not seen.

"We know of those who have been involved with the holiday special as children or helpers for many years.

"This support, both local and from further afield, ensures that there is a lot of enthusiasm and different skills to make the week a success," she stated.
