The council is warning residents to be on their guard following a number of bogus calls.
Hastings Borough Council, on its Facebook page, said a number of people have received hoax calls today (Wednesday, August 12), from an organisation claiming to be the authority working on behalf of the council tax and benefits department.
Callers have been told they have an incorrect tax band and are due a refund.
Residents are then being asked for their bank details.
The authority streesed these were hoax calls and confirmed there is no organisation working on behalf of the council.
Under no circumstances should residents give their bank details to these callers, the council said.
