Herring Fair returns

The popular Hastings Herring Fair returns for the fourth year running at the end of the month.

The two day festival takes place on Saturday October 31 11am – 4pm and Sunday November 1 11am – 4.30pm at the Stade Open Space, in the Old Town.

Organised by Hastings Borough Council and funded by FLAG (Fisheries Local Action Group) the fair will showcase the herring otherwise known as the ‘silver darling of the sea’ and the many ways it can be prepared.

The council’s deputy leader Cllr Kim Forward said: “We are pleased to be able to fund the Herring Fair for another year. The aim is to promote the local herring industry and showcase the herring which is so versatile and abundant at this time of year.”

“In true Hastings Festival style there will be lots on offer including cooking demonstrations at the Classroom on the Coast, fish smoking demos in the marquee and of course a great live music line up.

“Join Radiator Arts at their flag making workshop and have your say about food by taking part in Brighton University’s food research project.

“This free event will combine food stalls, local beers, wines and ciders all under cover at the Stade so the festival will not be affected by wet weather.

There will be performances by the RX Shantymen on Saturday 31 from 11.15am - 11.45am and Hastings Shanty Singers on Sunday 1 from 11.15am - 11.45am. Other love acts include The Salts, Now and Then and Jiggery Pokery.

Acclaimed local ceilidh band Sugar Loaf will bring the festival to a rousing close on the Sunday with a lively barn dance from 3pm - 4.30pm.

The Herring Fair follows on from the enormously successful Seafood and Wine Festival in September, which attracted thousands of people.
