A DEARTH in qualified nurses across 1066 Country has forced the Conquest to recruit from overseas.

East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs the hospital on The Ridge, announced this week it was hiring 20 new nurses from Portugal, pictured. Another 16 from the same country will arrive next month as part of a recruitment drive launched by the trust in a bid to tackle staff shortages.

A trust spokesman said it had not cost the organisation any extra money to train the new recruits because the Portuguese health system was on a par with the UK’s.

He said: “The trust has looked overseas for new nurses because, like many trusts across the country, there is a lack of qualified nurses locally.”

All the nurses speak fluent English.
