New chairman to take over at hospital trust

A NEW chairman will be taking the helm at the local hospital trust.

Stuart Welling has been appointed chairman of East Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust and will take up his position on July 11.

Until that date Steve Tinton will stand in as interim chairman of the trust, which runs both the Conquest Hospital and Eastbourne DGH.

He takes up his post from Friday (April 1) following the departure of current chairman Irene Dibben.

Mr Welling said: “I am delighted to be joining this new organisation. We have a range of important issues to address and the trust needs to further strengthen public confidence so that it is the first place of choice the people of East Sussex look to for their health care.

“I am totally committed to ensuring that all the services we provide meet the needs of local people, are of the highest quality and centred on patient safety,” he added

His appointment comes at a time when the trust is battling to clear £6 million worth of debt, amassed since last April.

It is currently awaiting a response from the Strategic Health Authority to see whether a bid to get £6 million in cash is successfu.

He is currently a non-executive director and audit chairman at NHS Hastings and Rother.

During 2010 he also spent a period as interim chairman of Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust.

Mr Tinton is currently the vice-chairman at the Strategic Health Authority, NHS South East Coast.
