The Hastings Winkle Club held its AGM in Mid-April and elected the Officers and Committee members for a new Winkle Club year. Admiral of the Fleet,The Lord Boyce, remains Club Patron and Sir Kenneth Warren our President. In May we held a very successful Social which raised over £1,000 and once again we are extremely grateful to Phil White ( our Hon.Sec. ) and his Band, ‘Loose Ends’ who provided the entertainment without charge.
We welcomed the 18th Hastings Scout Troup to Winkle Island where they made a great job of cleaning and polishing the Winkle Sculpture and also the Plinth,Plaques and Flagpole. The Club presented them with a Certificate of Appreciation for all their hard work.
The Club is in the process of setting up a new Fundraising and Promotions Committee and we hope not only to come up with new ideas for Events but also to sell Winkle Club Pens,Badges and wristbands on a regular basis from Winkle Island. Our aim is to raise even more money for local good causes.
Recently, Club members were happy to support The Blessing of the Sea at the Lifeboat Station and it was good to see the service well attended.
On July 4th, we have an invitation from The Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, our Club Patron, to go to Walmer Castle for an evening Reception which we have of course accepted and this should be a most prestigious occasion.
Pirate Day is on July 26th this year and we will be setting up our usual array of stalls on Winkle Island and will have some appropriate music playing. Helpers are needed on the day to man the sideshows and to rattle collecting buckets.
On August 6th (before the Pram Race. ), we are holding our Annual Putting Tournament at the Adventure Golf Courses on the Seafront. Players can tee off from 6 pm and there will be Trophies awarded to the Best Lady Player, Gentleman and Junior. All are welcome so come along, have fun and it is all in a good cause.
During Old Town Carnival Week, we need collectors at several events and the phone number to ring is given at the end of this article. On August 7th for instance, we again revive the ancient game of Winkle Tossing ( throwing winkles in to different sized containers. ) This game will be open to all and will run from 4 pm until 6 pm on Winkle Island. Prizes for the overall winners with the highest scores.
In September, on Sunday 6th, we commemorate 60 years since Sir Winston Churchill was made a Winkler. This event will take place in the Fishermen’s Museum and on Winkle Island. Final details to be announced nearer the time. Then no doubt, it will be on to the Seafood & Wine weekend when Winkle Island becomes ‘Fantasy Island’, complete with boats, music and sideshows etc.......
If you would like to help The Winkle Club in any way or your organisation would like to hear about our fascinating 115 year old history, please contact our Treasurer, Ian Porter on :07974 081582. We really do need your help even if you can only spare an hour or two. Thank You.
Until next time : winkle up !
