Hastings RSPB hold their first meeting of the autumn this evening (18th) at 7.30pm at the Taplin Centre, Upper Maze Hill St Leonards on Sea TN38 0LQ when Ken Brooks will be talking about The America Ground in Hastings. The present day site of Robertson Street and Claremont was once known locally as the “America Ground”.
Ken’s talk will show paintings and photographs of the Town Centre which was a natural harbour. By the early 19th Century an area to the west of the Priory Stream had become a no-man’s land with over 1,000 squatters. The site had to be cleared before development could begin.
Anyone interested in the history of Hastings is welcome to come to the talk for an admission fee of £3 which includes light refreshments. Further information on the Hastings RSPB group, which welcomes new members, is available from www.rspb.org.uk/groups/hastings or by phoning Michael on 07936532080 or Richard on 751790.
