A fundraising campaign set up to help refugees living in the Calais ‘Jungle’ has passed the £3,000 mark.

The Hastings Supports Refugees group launched the appeal on September 26 to buy shelters.

The initial target was to provide two shelters costing £600 each.

But thanks to the enormous generosity from members of the public, more than £3,400 has been raised, enough to buy five shelters.

Other groups across the UK and elsewhere in Europe are also raising funds for the weatherproof tents used by the United National High Commission for Refugees in camps around the world.

The shelters will be equipped with stoves to provide, heat, cooking and hot water.

Hastings Supports Refugees is a group made up of more than 800 people.
