Hastings volunteer Stephen Pearce has received the Retail Volunteer of the Year award from the British Heart Foundation for his relentless determination in the fight against heart disease.
Stephen won the charity’s award during Volunteers’ Week, the annual celebration that recognises the work of all volunteers across the UK.
A spokesperson for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) said each and every one of their volunteers is a real heart hero but Stephen scooped the accolade for the hard work and dedication he has demonstrated in the Hastings Furniture & Electrical Store, helping the charity to raise money to fund its lifesaving research.
Stephen said he is thrilled to have received the award. “I love coming in and volunteering, I get to work with some fantastic people and have made some wonderful friends,” he said.
“Everyone is so supportive, especially the manager. I have learnt a great amount since I started volunteering and have gained some invaluable experience. I would encourage anyone to volunteer for the BHF as it is such a rewarding experience and you get to meet the most fantastic and inspiring people.”
The BHF encourages their volunteers to not only use and develop the skills they already have, but the opportunity also helps them to keep their foot on the career ladder, work towards qualifications and gain some excellent experience. Whether a student, retired, or just having some spare time to give, the BHF says it has roles to suit everyone.
Robin Beaney, BHF Area Manager for Hastings said: “Volunteers are absolutely essential to the success of the charity, and play an integral part in fighting coronary heart disease, the nation’s single biggest killer.
“We wouldn’t be able to continue out life-saving research without them. Every pound raised, minute of time and donation to BHF shops helps to make a difference to people’s lives.”
In the last academic year BHF Shops and dedicated BHF Furniture & Electrical Stores awarded over 1000 NVQs in England and Wales and have even more staff and volunteer’s working towards the qualification this year. Visit: www.bhf.org.uk
